KSOC's Frequently Asked Questions

How can I listen to KSOC?

You can listen to us over the internet.Click here to listen right now! We do not have an FM or AM frequency, currently online is the only way to listen to our station. We are working on getting onto FM, but due to many complications it hasn't happened yet.

What hours does KSOC broadcast?

KSOC broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For a current schedule of live shows click here.

Why aren't you people on the airwaves?

It's a long story, mostly about money, power, and greed.

How can I get my very own show on KSOC?

Good question! To get started, simply come to the office and fill out an application, or you can print one out from here. We'll give anyone a show, you don't even need experience!

Okay then, where are you people located?

We're located in the Stevenson Union basement, right underneath the Rogue River Room, by the elevator. Our room number is SU 127. Click here for a map of the SOU campus.

How can I help your spectacular organization out?

Start your own awsome show! Tell your friends how great we are! We offer work-study and practicum credit. We also need people to help promote the station. We also gladly take donations of equipment or money. Our budget is small and anything is a great help. Donating is tax deductible and we will think you are swell.

What's up with www.sou.edu/su/ksoc?

That is our old page on SOU's website. That page will soon be deleted, so please point your browser to "www.radioksoc.net" from now on

Why do you play such obscure music?

We believe that mainstream radio has created a cultural wasteland in which only people who have the right social and business connections can get their music played. We think that musicians should be given opportunities based on their music, not their connections. Because of that, we have our Music Director, Spencer, screen all music submissions regardless of who or where they are comming from. We never accept any money or any other kind of perks for putting music on our playlist. The same cannot be said for many commercial stations.

I don't have the internet at home, is there any way I can still listen to KSOC?

Yes there is! If you go to the list of shows, you can find your favorite music/show and download mp3s that you can take home, play on your home computer, iPod, burn to CD, etc etc etc.

I just heard the coolest song on KSOC but I don't know what it is! How can I find out?

You can always call the station, 541.552.8762 if you would like to know what is being played. Another way you can find out who you are listening to is search a portion of the lyrics plus the term "lyrics" in your favorite search engine.

Who's the most attractive person at KSOC?

That would be Drew, the Production Manager.

Technical

Why do you use "Real" player?

The primary reason is that the "audio stream" itself is created with "Real" software: The format that it puts out is best understood by the "Real" player.

What about "Shoutcasting" or another format?

We are currently researching ways of making our stream format more "Universal". Keep checking back for more details, or feel free to suggest something.

Can I use another player?

It is possible that other media players will play our stream, so far we haven't done much testing on this. You will probably need to download a "Codec" (Howstuffworks.com article on streaming content) that can understand "Real Media" format (.rm, .ram file extension).

I don't like Real player or I'm worried it might cause problems

All we can say is that in our opinion, Real player has very much the same set of pros and cons that Windows, iTunes, or Winamp have. If you're concerned that your other music files will always open with Real instead of your favorite player, make sure that you tell it not to "associate audio files" with Real player when you install it. You can also go into the settings in Real or your favorite player and specify which types of files will be played automatically (On "double-click") by that player (Real: Tools->Preferences->Content ->Media Types->"Manually configure media types for RealPlayer"->Select). If you have concerns about content tracking, once again Real is no better or worse than its counterparts. You can find many helpful tools to counteract several types of content and activity tracking at www.safer-networking.org.

When I click on the "Listen" link, I get a "File not found" error from Real player

Try closing the player, refreshing out webpage, and trying again. If that doesn't work, our stream might be down temporarily. In that case just check back soon, we usually get it back up within a few hours at most.

Sometimes the stream "skips", stops, or Real player says "Communicating"

Try pausing the stream for a minute or two after you open it, that should eliminate skips and buffering time. Also remember that if you are using other applications that are streaming or downloading, that will cut down the amount of "bandwidth" available to you for the KSOC stream.

Why does "SouthernOregonSports.net" come up in the link to your stream?

Southern Oregon Sports is our stream carrier, and a pretty good one too! Definitely the place to go for Raider fans!
